Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The text complies with the bibliographic and style requirements indicated in the Guidelines for Authors.
  • The text does not have the names of the authors, nor any other indication or reference that would allow their identification. If an author is cited, "Author" is indicated in the bibliography and footnotes.
  • Images, if any, are attached as additional files in jpg or png format.
  • The text includes a cover letter.
  • Figures and tables are included in the text in the appropriate place (and not at the end of the document), duly numbered.
  • The submission has not been previously published or submitted to another journal (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the editor).
  • An additional text file is attached with the identification of all the signatories of the article, together with the roles describing the contribution made by each one (CRediT taxonomy).

Author Guidelines

For the presentation of the paper, authors should follow the rules expressed in the following points.

  1. An author may not have more than one article under evaluation at the same time.
  2. In the submission process, in "Step 2: Introduction of the submission metadata" the following information must be included as a minimum:
    • For each of the authors, name and surname, institutional affiliation (if any), e-mail, a brief biographical summary (approximately 50 words) and the ORCID identification number (http://orcid.org).
    • Title of the paper in the original language of the text and in English (in Spanish for English texts), with a maximum of 15 words.
    • Abstract of the paper (in the original language of the text and in English), with an approximate length of 150 words. Avoid giving agency to the abstract (better 'in this paper I discuss' than 'this paper discusses).
    • Keywords:

Specific indications

  • Research articles. The abstract should include: theoretical framework, method(s) followed, results and conclusion.
  • Theoretical review articles. The abstract should contain: field or subject of review, procedure, results and conclusion.
  • Literature review articles (state of the art). The abstract should contain: field or subject of review, procedure and conclusion.
  • Essays. The abstract should contain: thesis, synthesis of the argument used and conclusion.
  • Maximum length, 7500 words (bibliographical references and abstract included, cover letter not included).
  • The text of the paper should not include the name of the author(s). Likewise, anonymity should be maintained throughout the body of the text, including the bibliography. When the names of the authors remain in the text, the Committee of the journal will understand that they have no objection to the reviewers knowing their identity.
  • Once the article has been accepted (after review), a “final version” will be requested, de-anonymized and in strict compliance with the journal's standards, in order to begin the process of definitive publication.
  • The text should be headed by a Cover letter: A brief text (maximum 500 words) (in the same file) where the author(s) detail: (a) the main topic of the article, (b) the original and specific contribution made and (c) the justification of the relevance of the manuscript for the journal. This text will also be anonymized.
  • Articles should be written in a clear and pedagogical style. The Athenea Digital Committee advises to abolish impersonal style in the narrative and to avoid the use of an ultra-specialized lexicon.
  • Authors should avoid footnotes as much as possible. In any case, Athenea Digital will accept them as long as they do not hinder the agile reading of the text. When they do exist, they should appear at the foot of the page.
  • Only three levels of duly numbered headings will be accepted:
    1. Title
    1.1 Title...
  • References should basically follow APA standards (Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 7th edition) References format.

  • In the initial submission, which should be anonymous, acknowledgements or funding should not be added. If accepted, it is possible to add them for the final version.
  • In APA standards, non-textual material is referred to as tables and figures only, so drawings, maps, photographs, graphs... -anything that is not a table-, are referred to as “figures”. Tables and figures should be numbered and have a brief descriptive title below. They should always be indicated in the body of the text by their number (e.g., See table 1), and not by their position (do not use: in the following/previous figure), since it is possible that due to the final layout they may not appear exactly in the desired place.
  • Figures (graphs, images, photographs...) must be of sufficient quality for digital reproduction and the original graphic files must be attached in a separate file (preferably in JPG or PNG format).

  • References to empirical material such as interviews or field diary entries should have the following structure, in each occurrence of verbatim quotations (Identifier, name of technique, date).

    • (Amanda, personal interview, May 2018).

    • (John, focus group 1, July 2019)

    • (Field diary entry, December 2020).

    • (Interviewee 3, personal interview, March 2019).

  • As far as possible figures that are schematics or similar will be editable, except, for example, scanned photographs or drawings. If there are bar figures or other products made with spreadsheet, the original file with data and graphs should be included, not added as a static image.

  • Tables should be editable, never static images.

  • Quotations longer than 40 words should appear in a separate paragraph and indented.

    Leon Festinger (1957/1975) states that:
Text of the quotation text of the quotation text of the quotation text of the quotation text of the quotation text of the quotation text of the quotation text of the quotation text of the quotation text of the quotation text of the quotation text of the quotation text of the quotation text of the quotation text of the quotation text of the quotation text of the quotation text of the quotation (p. 146).

    Or,

    According to Dissonance Theory:
Text of the quote text of the quote text of the quote text of the quote text of the quote text of the quote text of the quote text of the quote text of the quote text of the quote text of the quote text of the quote text of the quote text of the quote text of the quote text of the quote text of the quote text of the quote text of the quote (Festinger, 1957/1975, p. 146).

Authorsip identification

This journal applies the CRediT taxonomy with the aim of promoting recognition and facilitating transparency in authorship. To this end, an additional text file must be attached, identifying all individuals listed as authors of the article, along with the roles that describe each person’s contribution. This information must be provided by the individual submitting the manuscript, who is responsible for ensuring that the role assignments are accurate, that no honorary authorships are included, and that the indicated roles have been agreed upon with the rest of the author team.
It should be noted that a single individual may assume multiple roles, and it is not necessary to assign all 14 role categories.

Example:
Julia García: writing - review and editing.
Esperanza Reyes: conceptualisation; writing – original draft; formal analysis; writing – review and editing.
Pedro González: software; writing – review and editing.
Jesús Balmaseda: methodology; writing – review and editing.
Ángel Benítez: conceptualisation; writing – original draft; writing – review and editing.

Plagiarism, fraud, and retraction

Authors must ensure that the data and results presented in the work are original and have not been copied, invented, distorted, or manipulated. Plagiarism in all its forms, self-plagiarism, multiple or redundant publication, as well as the invention or manipulation of data constitute serious breaches of ethics and are considered scientific fraud.
When an author discovers a serious error in their work, they are obliged to communicate it to the journal's editors as soon as possible to modify their work, withdraw it, retract it, or publish a correction or erratum. If a possible error is detected by any member of the Editorial Team, the authors are obliged to demonstrate that their work is correct.

Athenea Digital does not consider articles derived from master's or doctoral theses to be self-plagiarism.

Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)

You can consult the policy on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in articles at this link.

Funding Sources and Acknowledgements

In the interest of promoting transparency and ethics in scientific research, we ask authors to clearly specify the sources of funding that have contributed to their work (funder name and grant number). This information is essential to understanding potential biases and the adequacy of resources used in the research.

We also ask that you include acknowledgements to the individuals, institutions, and organizations that have provided support or significant contribution to the completion of the study.

These sections will be added, in the final version, at the end of the article, before the references, with a different title in each case: “Acknowledgements” and/or “Financing”.

The GDPR also allows for the recognition of “the public interest in the availability of the data,” which has a particular saliency for those involved in maintaining, with the greatest integrity possible, the public record of scholarly publishing.
