Design creativity: a sociocultural contribution

Abstract

In a framework where creativity is linked to progress, this essay proposes a sociocultural approach to study designers’ creative processes. In design, originality has monopolized definitions about creativity and is still a benchmark for defining subjects and their practices today. It is pertinent to assume a multidisciplinary perspective that takes into account advances in the sociocultural approach, including those in psychology and in professional design practice. On the one hand, this perspective endeavors to elude essentialism and, on the other, to understand creativity as a phenomenon in which four aspects are interwoven: the subject, the team work, the intermediaries, and the space. In this respect, a definition of creativity in design is proposed and various problems that should be consider are identified in order to avoid dichotomies between the creative and the non-creative.
