A Transforming Voice: Reflections on Voice Modification in Trans and gender diverse people

Abstract

Voice is crucial for individual gender expression. Trans and gender diverse people often find their voice doesn’t reflect their gender identity, which may lead to exploration of voice modification. Originally, such modifications aimed for cisheteronormativity. This essay broadens that perspective, contesting systems and norms that pathologize this group. This work includes insights from Michel Foucault and Butler on heteronormativity, Maurice Merleau-Ponty on body experience, and Donna Haraway and Karen Barad on posthumanism, technology, and intra-action.
