Subverting some dichotomies established by habit
Abstract
Establishing a dialogue with Tomás Ibañez (2001), Ian Hacking (1999), Donna Haraway (1991), and John Law and colleagues’ Actor Network Theory (1999), this paper seeks to reflect on the possibility of overcoming the dichotomy between realism and constructionism. Starting from the question “why should we, as social psychologists, take a position in this dispute?”, it explores some paths that have been taken in the contemporary debate on the foundations of knowledge. Arguing that we should abandon this and all other dichotomies that come in the wake of realism, it adopts the position that we live in a hybrid world that is a mixture of cultural perceptions, local moral orders, strategies of governmentality, objects, and technologies: that is, in a network of materialities that includes our ways of talking about the world. Given that this stance also implodes the fact/fiction dichotomy, it also seeks to reflect on the implications for research and for the definition of what counts as legitimate knowledge, taking the position that scientific reports are also genres of narrative.
