Citizen Laboratories in Education: An Exploratory Study of Experiences in Spain
Abstract
This article examines the concept of citizen laboratories, their relationship with citizen science, and their current development within the Spanish context, especially in the educational field. It reviews various conceptualizations found in the literature, highlighting cooperation, interdisciplinarity, and organizational flexibility as fundamental characteristics, as well as experimentation and continuous learning. A template for describing citizen laboratories is proposed and applied as a method of analysis for Spanish educational laboratories. The similarities and differences among the selected initiatives are analysed, highlighting their role in promoting citizen participation in research and innovation, aligned with European Union policies and Spanish legislation. The text emphasizes how citizen laboratories offer an environment for experimentation and co-creation, complementing the data collection typical of citizen science.
