Transformation and Tradition: Challenges and Strategies Facing the Loss of Traditional Women’s Clothing in Cuentepec

Authors

Abstract

This study analyzes the process of acculturation experienced by the indigenous community of Cuentepec, Mexico, focusing on the replacement of traditional women’s clothing with “urban” garments and on the cultural revitalization initiatives associated with this process. The research examines the composition of traditional women’s attire, the impacts of acculturation on dressing practices, and the role of education within this context of contemporary sociocultural transition. Data were collected between May 2022 and January 2023, using participant observation as the primary research method, complemented by interviews. We conclude that ethno-educational strategies that integrate and value indigenous cultural knowledge can strengthen the sense of belonging and social cohesion, promoting empowerment and the preservation of cultural identity within the community.
