Review of Oyama (2020). Tormenta
Abstract
In "Tormenta" (Storm), Thaís Oyama analyzes in detail the first year of Jair Bolsonaro's government in Brazil, a period that was marked by crises, intrigues and secrets. The book does not pretend to be an academic work in the traditional sense, but it provides valuable information on Bolsonaro's rise and the Bolsonarism phenomenon in Brazilian politics. The author presents unpublished data and offers interesting insights into how a politician previously considered irrelevant was able to come to power and stay in power despite the controversies.
One of the highlights of this book is the way in which Thaís Oyama addresses the relationship between Bolsonaro and the military, as well as her focus on the anti-globalist narrative that characterizes the government. In addition, she delves into the involvement of the Armed Forces and their role in contemporary Brazilian politics, providing a unique perspective on this crucial period.
