Discursive aspects of al-Qaeda’s jihadism in texts by Azzam, Bin Laden and Setmarian

Abstract

This paper intends to perform an analysis of some discursive resources that frame the ideological legitimation of al-Qaeda jihadism. Through the texts of three fundamental ideologues from different stages of al-Qaeda (Abdullah Azzam, Osama Bin Laden and Abu Musab al-Suri), the discursive strategies associated with some of the decisive ideological displacements in jihadist Islamism are explored, since fighting in Afghanistan in the late 1970s, to the scene following the 2001 attacks. The discourse analysis proposed allows to describe the different genres, subjective positionings, themes and argumentative schemes that have marked the ideological evolution of al-Qaeda.
