(Bio)medicalization in the “extremes” of life. Government technologies of childhood and aging
Abstract
The aim of the article is to describe and analyze some mechanisms related to childhood and aging, taking into account the notions of risk and improvement, both conceived as technologies of life. In order to do so, it systematizes and presents different theoretical features of medicalization, biomedicalization and politics of life’s perspectives, attending to the relevance and nuances of technologies within those perspectives. As a result of the crossing of the genealogies of the processes of medicalization and governance of childhood and of aging, we find that in both processes there is an anticipatory logic of risk and a search for improvement of health and life, with two vectors that operate coincidentally: the epidemiologization of life and the vital identification of future risks. The results allow to reflecting on forms of normalization oriented to mechanisms of prevention of risks or potential future effects. Keywords
