Sex and monstrosity. A genealogy of the sexual police

Abstract

This essay outlines different forms of Western sexual police from the Seventeen Century to the present. The genealogy will approach the problem from the point of view of hermaphroditism and transvestism. By “sexual police” I mean the determinations, forms, norms and ethos that defines sex through times, as well as the categories of which it is composed, and what is permitted and is possible to do, see and say through these sexual categories. This essay, pays special attention to the fears and its embodiment in some paradigmatic figures. In particular, it analyzes the historical meaning of sexual “monstrosity”, key to understand the different polices, including the own sexual police of gender feminism.

Antón Fernández de Rota Irimia, Instituto de Altos Estudios Nacionales, Quito

Sociólogo de formación y Doctor en Antropología Cultural, ha sido docente en diversas universidades ibéricas y latinoamericanas, así como investigador en la Universidad de California en Berkeley y el Instituto de Humanidades de la UDP en Santiago de Chile. Actualmente forma parte del Instituto de Altos Estudios Nacionales, universidad y think tank del Estado ecuatoriano, donde dirigió un equipo de investigación sobre racionalidades políticas y artes de gobierno. Su trabajo cruza la antropología histórica con la filosofía política en el estudio genealógico de la gubernamentalidad y la biopolítica, la génesis del Estado Moderno, la configuración onto-política de “lo social”, la conceptualización de la democracia y la filosofía de la deuda.
