Toward Scientifically Informed Protocols: The Case of Child Sexual Abuse
Abstract
Achieving justice in child sexual abuse (CSA) cases involves enormous challenges, as the characteristics of the crime often make it difficult to obtain material evidence or witness statements. This highlights the importance of obtaining reliable victim testimonies through interview protocols based on solid scientific evidence. Therefore, the present study aims to evaluate 10 forensic interview protocols in CSA cases widely used in Latin America, contrasting them with the scientific evidence on the psychology of memory and psychology of testimony of the last decade. Based on an exhaustive analysis, approaches congruent with the scientific evidence are identified, as well as inconsistencies and absences. Specific recommendations are proposed to update and improve these protocols, with the purpose of strengthening their effectiveness in the protection of minors and in the administration of justice.
